The Water Babies: A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby

By: Kingsley, Charles

Price: $40.00

Quantity: 1 available

Undated but in the late Victorian style and with gift inscription in front end paper dated 1887. Hardcover, 310 pages plus 12 pages of publisher's ads, several black and white illustrated plates, small in-text illustrations at the beginning of each chapter; red boards with gilt titles and decorative borders in black and gilt, boards rubbed and edge worn with occasional mild soiling, faded spine, pretty floral end papers, pages toned and brittle from age, binding a little tender. Originally published in 1862-63 as a serial for Macmillan's Magazine, The Water-Babies was first published in its entirety in 1863. It was written as part satire in support of Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species. The book was extremely popular in England, and was a mainstay of British children's literature for many decades, but eventually fell out of favor in part due to its prejudices (common at the time) against Irish, Jews, Americans, and the poor.
