Eighth printing; hardcover, 8 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches, 735 pages, small printed map of James Joyce's grave location laid in; three-quarter bound in blue marbled paper boards backed and tipped in brown Morocco, banded spine with title blocked in gilt, boards rubbed and scuffed at extremities, bits of leather scuffed away at corners, spine sun faded, decorative end papers, pages toned with age, binding sound. Small, folded mimeographed flyer laid in with the title: Wegweiser zum Grab des Schriftstellers James Joyce im Friedhof Zurich-Fluntern (Signpost to the tomb of the writer James Joyce in the cemetery Zurich-Fluntern). Inside is a brief biography of Joyce, and his wife, Nora-Joyce Barnacle, along with a map showing directions to their graves. The flyer is dated 21.12.62. The paper is toned and creased with some brown spots. Capturing a single day in the life of Dubliner Leopold Bloom, his friends Buck Mulligan and Stephen Dedalus, his wife Molly, and a cast of supporting characters, the author pushes Celtic lyricism and vulgarity to splendid extremes. A modernist novel of supreme stylistic innovation, James Joyce's Ulysses is the towering achievement of twentieth century literature. For Joyce, literature 'is the eternal affirmation of the spirit of man'. Written between 1914 and 1921, Ulysses has survived bowdlerization, legal action and bitter controversy. -- Shakespeare and Company
