Gray cloth with wrap-around copper label. Copper plate is crinkled and flaking along spine. Small spot of light soiling near tail of front joint. Prev owner's printed book plate in front end paper. Pages a bit toned from age. Binding sound. Dust jacket rubbed and edge worn with a few small, closed tears. Chipping at head of spine and along top rear edge. Toning along extremities. Old clear tape repairs/reinforcement to inside of dust jacket at edges. Not visible from the outside. Dust jacket now encased on protective mylar cover. 270 pages. First edition stated. Penciled note in rear end paper reads, "April 27, 1949. 1st edition. Bought at the sale of Frank Capra's library at the Parke-Bernet Galleries (lot no. 357). SC." Saroyan's first book collects 26 stories, all brief, and some only a page long, in the author's own idiosyncratic vein, written with great speed during a time when he claimed to have written a story a day for 30 days.
