Green cloth boards with stamped gilt decoration and titles and beveled edges. Top edges gilt. Boards are rubbed with fairly heavy edge wear. Short split to front joint near head of spine. Bottom front corner worn through. Some soiling to top front corner. Gilt to top edges is faded. Frontispiece (plate) appears nibbled along part of the bottom edge. Scattered foxing throughout. Rear hinge partially cracked. Binding sound. Binder's ticket in bottom spine corner of rear end paper from Edmonds & Remnants of London. 348 pages, plus the plates. Two plates color chromolithographs. The others are tinted or monochromatic. Large, heavy book measures about 8 x 11 inches. George Barnard was a professor of drawing at Rugby School and the author of at least two other instruction manuals, Landscape Painting in Water Colours and Barnard's Trees. Drawing from Nature is a fascinating look at the details of nature, including plants and animals, along with detailed descriptions of related places and things, accompanied by lush and detailed illustrations.
