Folio (14 x 11 inches); Cloth; IV, 65, [3] pages; Eight color lithographic plates. Brown cloth with gilt stamped titles, beveled edges, boards rubbed with scuffing to rear, corners and spine ends with heavier wear, spine end fraying, floral end papers, pages toned with very occasional smudge or sign of wear, binding sound. Eight stunning tissue guarded color lithographs, each with multiple illustrations. In addition to being and ornithologist and naturalist, Charles Johnson Maynard was a collector, a taxidermist, and an expert on the vocal organs of birds. In addition to birds, he also studied mollusks, moss, gravestones and insects, including butterflies. He published many books himself, unusual for the period because they contained color plates produced by a process that Maynard invented.
